Trail of the Month: Carter Falls Trail Hike
November is an ideal time to hike Carter Falls. The leaves are in their final stages of transformation, painting the trail in shades of gold, orange, and deep red. Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of our region, this trail offers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty. Spanning approximately 3 miles, the trail takes you through lush forests and rolling hills, culminating at the stunning Carter Falls.
The sound of rushing water and the picturesque views make this trail a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape or an invigorating workout, Carter Falls has something for everyone. The trailhead to Carter Falls connects in the other direction to a segment of North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail. This segment goes through nearby Byrd's Branch Campground and includes a 0.4-mile spur trail (one way) from the Mountains-to-Sea Trail to Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery.
Some folks like to park at Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery and hike from the winery through the campground to access the Carter Falls Trail. This sets you up perfectly for one of our favorite post-hike rewards - a glass of wine from one of our local wineries.
Don’t forget to pack a picnic to enjoy by the falls! This scenic spot is ideal for relaxing and soaking in the beauty of nature. So lace up your hiking boots, grab your family and friends, and make your way to Carter Falls this month. Happy hiking!
The Faces of Elkin: Erin Wooten
Welcome to the Explore Elkin blog series where we celebrate a "Face of Elkin" each month. These individuals are special members of our community who have been nominated to share their unique stories. If you would like to be featured as the "Face of Elkin" or know someone deserving of this recognition, please fill out this form.
This month, we’re excited to spotlight Erin Wooten as our Face of Elkin, nominated by her daughter. Erin’s journey to Elkin began around ten years ago when she met her husband, Greg, who was a longtime resident. Since then, Erin has become a cherished member of our community, wholeheartedly embracing everything that makes Elkin special.
Erin’s love for Elkin shines each fall during the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival, where she creates cherished memories with her grandchildren. She treasures Elkin’s welcoming, small-town charm, enjoying local events like Trivia at the Troll, antique shopping, and paint classes. Her favorite events also include the annual Brrrfest and Great American Soup Off, where she indulges in the community’s friendly atmosphere and delicious soups.
This year has been challenging for Erin after Greg’s passing in February. She’s found solace in community support and continues to enjoy visiting Angry Troll Brewing, a place filled with memories of their time together.
Elkin, to Erin, is home—a place defined by kindness, vibrant activities, and a supportive spirit. We are honored to celebrate Erin Wooten as this month’s Face of Elkin, and we thank her for embodying the warmth that makes our town so special.
