Small town big community: Ways to give back for national day of community service

Updated: 4 days ago

November welcomes the observation of Community Service Day on the 4th. National Day of Community Service is a perfect opportunity to reflect on how we can come together as a community to support one another. Our charming town thrives on the spirit of giving and collaboration. This year, let’s roll up our sleeves and make a difference! Here are some fantastic ways to get involved and give back right here in our beautiful town.

Elkin Valley Trails Association

Join the Elkin Valley Trails Association for a workday dedicated to maintaining and enhancing our beloved local trails on the first Thursday of each month. Whether you’re an experienced trail enthusiast or just looking to lend a hand, this is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while contributing to our community’s recreational spaces. Bring water, your gloves, sturdy shoes, and a willingness to work alongside fellow nature lovers. The sense of accomplishment after a day on the trails is truly rewarding!

This month, the Trail Titans Workday is on Thursday, November 7th. The group will be meeting at 8:30AM at the driveway (Spice Farm Way) across from the Wayne's Farm feed plant on 268 east of Elkin for a walkthrough on Spice Farm Trail where they will be cutting back forest creep, clearing the two entrances, and widening the trail in spots.

(the EVTA asks that you bring grass whips or weed eaters, loppers, small chainsaw, gloves, water and smiles)

2. EVTA Triple T’s (Trail, Trailhead, and Town)

Triple T Work Days - Volunteer!

The Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA) invites volunteers to participate in their Triple T initiative on the third Saturday of each month. This project focuses on beautifying the town through trail enhancements, maintaining trailheads, and fostering community spirit. Whether you’re planting flowers, painting signs, or picking up litter, your efforts will help make Elkin a more inviting place for residents and visitors alike. Let’s show our pride in Elkin by sprucing up our trails!

This month, the triple T's event is the donning of the green. On Saturday, November 16th the group will be donning the bridges and gongs with garlands and decorations for the Christmas season along the 1 1/4 mile E&A Rail Trail. No experience necessary! The EVTA simply asks that you bring small hand clippers if you've got 'em and your holiday spirit! A perfect opportunity to include your kids in giving back to our community as well.

Cardboard City is a unique and impactful fundraising event organized each November by The Ark. This fundraiser helps to raise awareness about homelessness while fostering empathy and understanding within our community. Participants will construct makeshift homes from cardboard to simulate the experience of being homeless for a night. It’s a powerful way to engage with important social issues while building connections with others. Sign up to participate or volunteer to help organize the event! This year will be the 10th annual Cardboard City and it will be held on Saturday, November 23rd at the Heritage and Trails Center in downtown Elkin. We can't wait to see you there!

4. Trim a Tree for Charity

Explore Elkin's Trim-a-Tree for Charity

Get into the holiday spirit early by participating in the Trim a Tree for Charity event. This initiative invites local businesses and residents to decorate trees downtown, with each tree representing a different charity. As you trim the trees, you’ll not only spread holiday cheer but also raise awareness for various causes that need our support. It’s a fun, creative way to give back while fostering a sense of community pride. This year, Trim a Tree for Charity will begin on November 29th and the trees will be set up downtown in the lot beside of the Heritage Center, in front of the stages. More details on this event to come!

5. Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many in our region are still recovering from the storm’s impact. Elkin residents can come together to support relief efforts by donating supplies, volunteering with local organizations, or participating in fundraisers. Check in with local churches and community centers for specific needs and how you can help. Every little bit makes a difference, and together we can help our neighbors rebuild.

On Monday, November 4th the Elkin Public Library will be hosting an event where you can knit hats and mittens for Western NC residents affected by Hurricane Helene. Completed items will be accepted at the Library until December 2nd when donations will be taken to the appropriate drop off point.

Reeves Theater Relief Concert - Elkin, NC

On Saturday, November 16th, The Reeves Theater and Cafe will be hosting a Hurricane Helene Relief Concert where all funds will go to the WNC Long Haul- Recovery and Reclamation Fund.

Foothills Arts Center - Elkin, NC

Art enriches our community and provides a space for creativity and expression. The Foothills Arts Council is a fantastic local organization that offers classes, workshops, and events to foster the arts. Consider donating your time, materials, or funds to support their initiatives. Whether you’re an artist or an art enthusiast, your contribution will help keep the arts vibrant in Elkin.

 7. Shop Local!

Shop Downtown Elkin!

In a world where online shopping and big-box retailers often dominate, the importance of supporting local businesses cannot be overstated. When you choose to shop local, you’re not just making a purchase; you’re investing in the heart of your community. Venture out to our local farmers market, stop by any of our unique downtown shops, consider shopping at or donating to the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop- there are a multitude of ways to support our local businesses. Our local farmers market has officially switched to their fall/winter location- they will now operate from the Heritage Center downtown on Saturday mornings from 9:00am-12:00pm.

This National Day of Community Service, let’s come together as a small town with a big heart. Each of these opportunities not only allows us to give back but also strengthens the bonds within our community. Whether you choose to volunteer for a workday, participate in Cardboard City, or support local arts, your involvement makes a lasting impact. Together, we can ensure that Elkin continues to be a welcoming and supportive place for everyone.

Let’s make this day memorable—join in the efforts and show how we can all contribute to the greater good!
